What football games are on Thanksgiving?
Most people consider Thanksgiving a great time to gather with friends and watch football games on TV or in person. This is why I am always interested in what football games are on Thanksgiving!
If you are anything like me, you have a lot of work to do this holiday season. It's not too late to relax and take a break from your work.
What Football Games Are Available on Thanksgiving
On Thanksgiving, the first football games are played in the afternoon. Most games start at 12:30 pm. Why? Because you don't want to miss a game.
This is a good option if you are looking to catch a morning NFL game, then move on to college or high school football.
These games can almost always be found on TV, so they are easy to find.
Keep in mind, however, that not all football games are shown on Thanksgiving. You should also be aware that there are times when football isn’t shown at all. It's best to stay on top of the local schedule.
Who plays on Thanksgiving NFL
There are a few exceptions to the rule. For example, in 2015, only one game was available to watch: the Green Bay Packers vs. Detroit Lions.
Here's a tip to college football fans: Don't wait too long if you want some Big Ten action while on vacation.
This would mean you won't be able to watch Big Ten football games on Thanksgiving. Don't despair, there are still other options. If you're looking for Big Ten football, you can always try the NFL Draft and the College Football Playoff.
Who plays on the Thanksgiving NFL New Years Eve Weekends
These games aren’t available on television. Access to older broadcasts of the games would be required. You could also wait to see who wins the Super Bowl, though that can be quite a wait.
You may have heard of the NFL New Years Eve Games, but they weren't always held on Thanksgiving. They were originally scheduled for Christmas, but the league moved them an hour back so that they could be aired on TV with the rest of the games.
NFL Schedule for Thanksgiving 2021
What three NFL games will you be able to see on Thanksgiving 2021?
Chicago Browns at Detroit Lions
The Chicago Bears will host the Detroit Lions in the first game of their Thanksgiving slate. This game will take place in Week 12. Will we see you there?
Las Vegas Raiders at Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys will continue their Thanksgiving tradition and take on Jon Gruden, the Las Vegas Raiders. Will Dak Prescott, the Cowboys' quarterback, be able lead a strong Dallas offense against a defense that was weak last season? Will Derek Carr be able to take advantage of one the worst NFL defenses last year? Or will a large defensive draft suffice to improve the Cowboys secondary?
Buffalo Bills at New Orleans Saints
The primetime slot will see Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills take on the New Orleans Saints. Drew Brees is now retired and New Orleans has two contenders for the center position: Jameis Winston (and Taysom Hill)
History of Thanksgiving games by the NFL
The 2021 NFL season will mark the 102nd anniversary of the NFL's Thanksgiving games. The Decatur Staleys and Chicago Tigers had a game in 1920 with the condition that anyone losing would be expelled from the league. It is widely believed that this game was the first NFL game to be played on Thanksgiving. The NFL has been playing a Thanksgiving game every year since then, except for the Second World War (1940-1944).
Over the years, there have been many variations in the number of games played. Two games became a tradition in 1960, when the NFL and AFL played each other. The two-game format was preserved after the merger of the two leagues. In 2006, the format was expanded to three games when a primetime match was added. Every season, the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys host the first two matches.
The third game features two additional teams. These teams change each year. From 2017 through 2019, the primetime game featured a divisional match. Washington was faced with the New York Giants in 2017. The Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints were in contention for the 2018 and 2019 games. The NFL had the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers scheduled to meet in 2020. The positive COVID-19 test resulted in the game being postponed.
What was the outcome of the 2020 Thanksgiving Games
For the first time since 2006, there were only two Thanksgiving games last season. The Steelers-Ravens game was rescheduled for Tuesday, the next day. This left only two games between the Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, and the Dallas Cowboys & Washington Football Team.
Houston Texans 41, Detroit Lions 25
It looked like the first of two Thanksgiving Games 2020 was going to be close in the second quarter. With 12:56 left in the quarter, the Texans led the Lions 14-13. The Texans had a nine point lead at halftime (23-14). Despite scoring the first quarter's points, the Lions wouldn't score again until the Texans had 24 points.
J.J. Watt scored a defensive touchdown, and Deshaun Watson and Will Fuller both completed touchdown passes. Watson finished the game with 17-of-25 yards and 4 touchdowns. Matthew Stafford was 28-of-42 for 295 yard, with 1 touchdown, and 1 interception. Detroit couldn't build on the early points, though Adrian Peterson did find the end zone twice in halftime. This was the fourth consecutive loss for the Lions in Thanksgiving games, something they will look to correct in the 2021 NFL season.
Washington Football Team 41, Dallas Cowboys 16.
It looked close in the second game, but once again the road team won. Washington led by 20-16 at the end of the fourth quarter. Washington would score 21 points unanswered to blow out the Cowboys. Washington won the NFC East crown thanks to this game.
Antonio Gibson carried it 20 times for 115 yards with 3 touchdowns. Ezekiel Elliott, however, managed only 32 yards in 10 attempts. Amari Cooper, the Cowboy with the most success was Amari Cooper. He had 112 yards and scored a touchdown on eight targets. Dallas is hoping for a better outcome to their 2021 NFL Thanksgiving Game.
